Selective Selling will improve company profits. When applied at two companies, profits increased significantly (as much as (60%). The process involves looking at the profit margin of each of the products offered, then analyzing the markets for these products. Then as a team, focus energies on offering the most profitable products to potential customers. The time and energy invested in this process will produce rewards for all.

 

If after you analyze your products and learn they have the same margins, then analyze which products are the best sellers and focus energies on selling more of these products to your customers. Also figure out which products your sales team finds it easiest to sell. Learn why and then focus energies on these as well.

At one of my companies, we were tasked with introducing a technical product manufactured by a foreign sister company. My sales team had to be trained in depth on this new product and we had to learn about international safety standards to be able to sell it. The decision makers for this type of product were typically engineers with their Electrical Engineering degree. We learned immediately that we were not communicating effectively with the engineers (we were not engineers) because some of the technical questions they needed answered were not covered in our training. We lost more than a few opportunities because of this challenge.

We were able to get the answers to their questions eventually but the lapse in time hurt us. For one very important sales call, a new automotive plant in Tennessee, I asked one of our degreed engineers to join me. I performed all the sales functions (setting appointment with decision makers, handling the presentation, closing etc.) while he handled all the technical questions. The sales order for the products was quite large and what we learned was the automotive engineers enjoyed speaking with our engineer and that this approach was successful. Maybe we could repeat this.

The sales team started using this approach on their sales calls. The engineers liked getting away from the manufacturing for a day or two and the sales team liked the resulting orders which were repeating at some accounts because all the technicalities had been addressed. I pioneered the term Team Selling while discussing the new product launch at a Board of Directors meeting. It was the best way to describe what we were doing to position the sister company’s product in the US.

We expanded this approach by inviting our inside sales and customer service personnel to join us in meeting with customers. Everyone enjoyed meeting each other and pairing an inside rep with an outside rep to meet select customers locked us into these accounts. Relationships were strengthened by doing this and incoming orders went soaring.

Evaluate your sales process and determine if this approach is workable and profitable. You may find your inside people have good relationships with your customers and these relationships improve with in person meetings.

The resources offered here are Free downoloads, virus free and free to use. Some have upgrades to more advanced features or more clients allowed, as in the case with HubSpot. These programs are from the Open Spource groups that volunteer their skills to create really usefull software. I include them here because businisses need the type of programs offered to be more efficient and productuctive. On the commercial market, these type of programs are very expensive and really no better than the Open Source programs.

 

Microsoft Office has different monthly pay plans and add ons that are an additional charge.  LibreOffice is as good if not better for my needs. Maybe you as well. I do not require complicated program features. Most small businesses don't. So why pay for them. Get them Free from Open Source.

 

What I've done is save you time by having the downloads available here so you don't put in the time to find them. If you need a particular type of program, google Open Source software for that program. Or feel free to contact TDP Consultants and ask. I can look into it and get back to you. This is me paying back for all the help I've received over the years.
